Task Order

Task Order. A task order is an order for services placed under a contract that already exists, like an IDIQ, a GWAC or a GSA schedule. It names the specific work, price and period, while the parent contract supplies the general terms.

Only holders of the parent contract can receive task orders under it. On multiple-award contracts, task orders are usually competed among holders. Each task order gets its own order number and can have its own options.

Why it matters to a small contractor

Much of the real money in federal services flows through task orders, not standalone contracts. Ask primes what IDIQs they hold and which task orders are coming so you can price early.

Example

A prime holds a base maintenance IDIQ. The base issues a $180,000 task order for HVAC filter changes and coil cleaning across 30 buildings. The prime brings in a local HVAC sub to perform.

Task Order: common questions

What is the difference between a task order and a delivery order?

Task orders buy services. Delivery orders buy supplies or products.

Are task orders posted on SAM.gov?

Many are not, because they only go to the parent contract holders. Some agencies post notices, but most of the action stays inside the contract.
