PIID (Procurement Instrument Identifier)
PIID stands for Procurement Instrument Identifier. A PIID is the unique ID for each federal contract, order, agreement and solicitation. It typically includes the issuing office code, fiscal year, a letter for the type of instrument, and a serial number.
Common type letters include C for contracts, D for IDIQs, P for purchase orders, A for agreements like BPAs, F for orders, and Q for requests for quotes. Modifications get their own numbers tied to the PIID.
Why it matters to a small contractor
Put the PIID on every invoice and letter. Using it right gets you paid faster and helps you look up past awards in public data.
Example
A PIID that ends in 26P0042 tells you it is a purchase order issued in fiscal year 2026, serial number 42, from that contracting office.
PIID: common questions
Is a PIID the same as a solicitation number?
They use the same format, but the solicitation number and the award number are usually different.
Do task orders have their own PIID?
Yes. Each order gets its own identifier linked to the parent contract.
