CLIN (Contract Line Item Number)

CLIN stands for Contract Line Item Number. A contract line item number is a numbered line in the schedule of a contract. Each CLIN describes a separate item or service with its own quantity, unit and price. Base and option periods often have their own CLINs.

Sub-line items, called SLINs, break a CLIN into smaller parts for tracking, funding or pricing. Invoices are billed against CLINs, so your billing must match them.

Why it matters to a small contractor

Fill in every CLIN exactly as asked, with the unit the government listed. Missing or misread CLINs are a common reason quotes get thrown out.

Example

CLIN 0001 is monthly janitorial for 12 months at $3,000 per month. CLIN 0002 is window washing, 2 events at $1,500 each. Total base year is $39,000.

CLIN: common questions

What is a SLIN?

A sub-line item under a CLIN, used to split it into parts for pricing or funding.

Why do CLIN numbers start at 0001 and 1001?

Often 0001 series is the base year and 1001, 2001 and so on are option years.
