Change Order
Change Order. A change order is a written order from the contracting officer that changes the work within the general scope of the contract. It is a unilateral modification, so the contractor must proceed.
If the change raises your cost or time, you are entitled to ask for an equitable adjustment in price or schedule. Contracts set deadlines for making that request.
Why it matters to a small contractor
Track every change, with dates, photos and costs. Without records, getting paid for extra work becomes much harder.
Example
Mid-project, a contracting officer orders a roofing crew to use a thicker membrane. The crew submits a request for $7,400 in added cost and gets an adjustment.
Change Order: common questions
What is a request for equitable adjustment?
It is your written request for more money or time because of a change. It is usually the first step before a formal claim.
Can someone other than the contracting officer issue a change order?
No. Only a contracting officer with authority can change the contract.
