PoP (Period of Performance)

PoP stands for Period of Performance. The period of performance is the start and end dates during which the contractor must perform the work. It applies to the base period, each option and each order.

Work done outside the period of performance generally is not covered and may not be paid. Extensions require a contract modification.

Why it matters to a small contractor

Do not start before the PoP starts or keep working after it ends without a signed modification. Unauthorized work is one of the most common ways small contractors go unpaid.

Example

A task order runs from June 1 to September 30. A crew finishes a final punch list on October 3 without an extension, and the agency questions paying for those days.

PoP: common questions

Is the period of performance the same as the contract length?

The contract's total possible length includes all options. Each period has its own PoP dates.

Can the PoP be extended?

Yes, through a modification signed by the contracting officer.
