Option Period

Option Period. An option period is a set extra period of work, priced in your original offer, that the government can choose to add. It is exercised by a unilateral modification, usually with written notice before the current period ends.

Before exercising, the contracting officer must confirm the need still exists, funds are available, and the option price is still a good deal. Your performance record weighs heavily in that choice.

Why it matters to a small contractor

Treat every month as an audition for the next option. Late reports, missed visits or complaints give the government a reason to recompete instead of extending.

Example

Sixty days before year one ends, a contractor gets a preliminary notice of intent to exercise option year one. The modification arrives on time and work continues.

Option Period: common questions

What if the option is exercised late?

If the government misses the contract's deadline, it may need your agreement, which gives you room to negotiate.

Can options be for more quantity instead of more time?

Yes. Some options add quantities or extra services rather than more time.
