SAM renewal (Annual SAM registration renewal)

SAM renewal stands for Annual SAM registration renewal. A SAM.gov registration expires one year after it was last activated. To keep it active, an authorized person must log in, review every section, update anything that changed, and resubmit. This is called renewing or updating your registration.

SAM.gov sends reminder emails to your points of contact as the expiration date approaches. A renewal still goes through the same validation checks as a new registration, so changes to your name, address or bank can slow it down. Start at least a month or two early.

Why it matters to a small contractor

If your registration lapses, agencies may be unable to award you a new contract, and payments on existing work can be delayed. Put your expiration date on your calendar and treat the renewal like a license renewal.

Example

A landscaping company's SAM expiration falls in March, right when spring grounds contracts get awarded. The owner sets a January reminder to renew so the record is active during bid season.

SAM renewal: common questions

Does SAM renewal cost anything?

No. Renewing is free. Emails offering paid renewal are from private companies, and some look official, so check the sender carefully.

What happens if my SAM registration expires during a contract?

You keep the existing contract, but payments and new awards or modifications can be held up until you are active again. Renew as soon as you notice.
