Capability statement

Capability statement. A capability statement is a short marketing document, usually one page, that tells government buyers and prime contractors who you are and what you can do. It typically lists your core services, differentiators, past performance, NAICS and PSC codes, UEI and CAGE code, certifications, and contact information.

Agencies often ask for one in response to sources sought notices and at industry days. Primes use them to quickly decide whether to add you to a team.

Why it matters to a small contractor

Keep a clean, current capability statement as a PDF ready to email. Tailor the top section to each agency or prime, focusing on the services they actually buy.

Example

A small HVAC company prepares a one-page capability statement listing its service area, NAICS 238220, its CAGE code, three recent commercial maintenance jobs, and its owner's phone number, then sends it to a base small business office.

Capability statement: common questions

What should I avoid in a capability statement?

Vague claims, long paragraphs, and listing services you do not really perform. Be specific and use numbers you can back up.

Can I include commercial work as past performance?

Yes. Commercial and state or local work counts, especially if it is similar in size and scope to what the agency buys.
