Reps and certs (Representations and certifications)

Reps and certs stands for Representations and certifications. Reps and certs are the legal statements a business makes to the government, such as its size, ownership status, compliance with labor and tax laws, and whether it has certain prohibited telecom equipment. You complete most of them once in SAM.gov, and they apply to your offers.

Some solicitations ask for extra representations that SAM does not cover. Because these are legal statements, a false representation can lead to contract termination, suspension, debarment or penalties.

Why it matters to a small contractor

Read the reps and certs section of SAM carefully instead of clicking through it. Your answers follow you into every bid you submit.

Example

A security guard company updates its SAM reps after the owner sells part of the business, so its ownership and size statements stay accurate on new bids.

Reps and certs: common questions

How often do I update reps and certs?

At least once a year when you renew SAM, and any time something important changes, like ownership, size or address.

What if the solicitation's NAICS changes my size answer?

Your SAM reps show size by NAICS code. On each offer you represent size against that bid's code, and some solicitations ask you to confirm it in the offer itself.
