MPT (Micro-Purchase Threshold)
MPT stands for Micro-Purchase Threshold. The micro-purchase threshold is the dollar level under which a buyer can purchase without getting competing quotes, as long as the price is reasonable. As of October 1, 2025, the general micro-purchase threshold is $15,000, up from $10,000.
Lower limits still apply in some cases. Construction covered by federal prevailing wage rules has a $2,000 micro-purchase limit, and services covered by the Service Contract Labor Standards have a $2,500 limit. Buyers are expected to spread micro-purchases among qualified vendors.
Why it matters to a small contractor
Small jobs under the micro-purchase threshold can be bought by a card holder on the spot. Get known by local base and office staff, and take cards, so you are the easy call.
Example
A federal office needs a broken door closer replaced for $1,200. The card holder calls a local handyman business and pays by government purchase card the same day.
MPT: common questions
Why is the limit lower for some construction and service work?
The prevailing wage thresholds for construction ($2,000) and service contract labor standards ($2,500) are set by statute and were not raised in the 2025 inflation update.
Can a buyer split a job to stay under the threshold?
No. Splitting a requirement to avoid the threshold is not allowed.
