SAT (Simplified Acquisition Threshold)
SAT stands for Simplified Acquisition Threshold. The simplified acquisition threshold is the dollar level under which agencies can use simpler, faster buying methods. As of October 1, 2025, the general SAT is $350,000, up from $250,000. Higher thresholds apply to certain contingency and emergency buys.
Below the SAT, agencies can use requests for quotes, purchase orders and BPAs with less paperwork. Purchases above the micro-purchase threshold and at or below the SAT are generally reserved for small businesses when the rule of two is met.
Why it matters to a small contractor
The space between the micro-purchase threshold and the SAT is the sweet spot for small trades. Bids here are simpler, quicker, and usually set aside for small business.
Example
A base needs a parking lot resealed, estimated at $85,000. Because that is under the SAT, the office sends out a simple RFQ to small businesses and awards a PO in three weeks.
SAT: common questions
What was the SAT before October 2025?
It was $250,000. The FAR Council raised it for inflation effective October 1, 2025.
Are all buys under the SAT set aside?
Generally they are reserved for small businesses if the contracting officer expects at least two capable small bidders at fair prices.
