WAWF (Wide Area Workflow)
WAWF stands for Wide Area Workflow. Wide Area Workflow is the Department of Defense's electronic invoicing and receiving system. Contractors use it to submit invoices, receiving reports and combined documents, and government users use it to accept the work so payment can be made. It was briefly renamed iRAPT and later went back to the WAWF name, and it is accessed through PIEE.
Your contract tells you which WAWF document type to use and the routing codes (such as the issuing office, inspector and pay office DoDAACs). Using the wrong type or codes is one of the most common reasons defense invoices get rejected.
Why it matters to a small contractor
Copy the WAWF instructions from your contract into a checklist and follow them exactly every time. Getting this right is the difference between being paid in weeks and waiting months.
Example
A landscaping contractor finishes a month of base mowing and logs into PIEE to create a WAWF invoice using the document type and DoDAAC codes listed in the contract clause.
WAWF: common questions
Where do I find my WAWF routing codes?
In the contract, usually in the clause on electronic submission of payment requests. Ask the contracting officer if anything is missing.
Can I mail a paper invoice instead?
Generally no for DoD contracts. Electronic submission is required, with very limited exceptions.
