SIN (Special Item Number)

SIN stands for Special Item Number. A Special Item Number is a category code under the GSA Multiple Award Schedule. Each SIN covers a specific group of similar products or services, like janitorial services, landscaping or office furniture.

When you get a schedule, you are awarded specific SINs. You can only sell items that fit your awarded SINs, and buyers often search and send requests by SIN. Many SINs use numbers that match NAICS codes.

Why it matters to a small contractor

Picking the right SINs is as important as getting the schedule. Pick too narrow and you miss requests; pick ones you cannot support and you risk being removed later.

Example

A grounds company applies for the landscaping SIN. Once awarded, it starts receiving eBuy requests sent to holders of that SIN.

SIN: common questions

Can I add SINs later?

Yes. You can request a modification to add SINs, with supporting experience and pricing.

Is a SIN the same as a NAICS code?

No, but many SINs are numbered to line up with NAICS codes, which can be confusing.
