Login.gov

Login.gov. Login.gov is a sign-in service run by GSA that many federal websites use, including SAM.gov and SBA's certification portal. You create one account with your email, a strong password and a second security step, such as an authentication app or security key.

Your Login.gov account belongs to you as a person, not to your business. Business permissions in SAM.gov are attached to your personal account through roles.

Why it matters to a small contractor

Use an email address you will keep long term, and set up a backup security method. If the only person with access leaves your company, you can lose time getting control of your SAM record back.

Example

An office manager creates a Login.gov account with her work email and an authenticator app, then the owner grants her a role on the company's SAM registration.

Login.gov: common questions

Can my whole company share one Login.gov account?

No. Each person should have their own account. Shared accounts break security rules and cause problems when people leave.

What if I lose my phone with the authenticator app?

Use a backup method you set up, such as backup codes. Without one, you will need to go through Login.gov's account recovery, which can take longer.
