State vendor registration (State and local vendor registration)
State vendor registration stands for State and local vendor registration. Each state, and many counties, cities and school districts, keeps its own vendor registration system, separate from SAM.gov. Registering usually means creating an account, entering your tax ID and business details, picking commodity codes for what you sell, and completing a W-9 or the state's equivalent payee form.
Some states use their own systems and others use commercial platforms. Some charge an optional fee for extra notifications, but basic registration is usually free. States may also run their own small, minority or veteran business certification programs.
Why it matters to a small contractor
State and local work is often the fastest way for a trades business to build public-sector past performance. Register in your home state's system and the systems of the largest cities and counties you serve.
Example
A roofing company registers with its state procurement portal and its county's bid site, selects roofing commodity codes, and starts receiving email alerts for school and courthouse roofing bids.
State vendor registration: common questions
Does SAM registration cover state bids?
No. SAM is for federal work. States and localities have their own separate registrations.
Do I need a separate state certification for small business status?
Often, yes. Many states have their own small or historically underutilized business certifications that do not automatically accept federal ones.
