ITAR registration (International Traffic in Arms Regulations registration with DDTC)

ITAR registration stands for International Traffic in Arms Regulations registration with DDTC. The International Traffic in Arms Regulations control the export of defense articles, defense services and related technical data listed on the U.S. Munitions List. U.S. companies that manufacture, export or broker these items must generally register with the Directorate of Defense Trade Controls at the State Department.

Manufacturers must register even if they never export. Registration is done online, requires an annual fee, and must be renewed. Registration alone does not authorize exports; specific exports also need licenses or exemptions.

Why it matters to a small contractor

Most trades and service firms will never need ITAR registration. If you machine or build parts that are specially designed for military use, check with an export control advisor before taking the work.

Example

A small shop asked to manufacture housings for a military radio learns the parts are on the U.S. Munitions List and registers with DDTC before starting production.

ITAR registration: common questions

Is ITAR registration the same as JCP certification?

No. JCP lets you receive controlled technical data from DoD. ITAR registration with the State Department is required to manufacture or export defense articles. Some firms need both.

Does ITAR apply to janitorial or grounds work on a base?

Generally no. ITAR applies to defense articles, services and technical data, not routine facility services.
