SBA VetCert (Veteran Small Business Certification program)

SBA VetCert stands for Veteran Small Business Certification program. VetCert is the SBA program that certifies Veteran-Owned Small Businesses and Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Businesses. Congress moved this job from the Department of Veterans Affairs to SBA, and SBA took over on January 1, 2023.

Firms previously verified by the VA were carried over, and self-certified SDVOSBs were given until the end of 2023 to apply. A VetCert certification is accepted government-wide, including for the VA's own veteran set-asides.

Why it matters to a small contractor

If you see an old guide pointing you to the VA's 'Vets First Verification' or 'CVE' to get certified, that process is gone. Apply through SBA instead.

Example

An Army veteran who owns a fencing company reads that he needs VA verification. He checks SBA's site, learns VetCert replaced it, and applies through MySBA Certifications.

SBA VetCert: common questions

What documents does VetCert require?

Expect proof of veteran status (such as a DD-214), proof of any service-connected disability rating for SDVOSB, and business ownership and governing documents. SBA lists current requirements on its site.

Is VetCert free?

Yes. SBA does not charge to apply.
