FSC (Federal Supply Class)

FSC stands for Federal Supply Class. A Federal Supply Class, or FSC, is a 4-digit code that groups similar products. The first two digits are the Federal Supply Group, a broad category, and the last two narrow it down. For example, 4130 covers refrigeration and air-conditioning components.

FSCs are the product side of the Product and Service Code system, and they also make up the first four digits of every National Stock Number. Defense buying systems such as DIBBS let suppliers search open requests by FSC.

Why it matters to a small contractor

If you sell parts or supplies, the FSC is how you filter thousands of defense requests down to the handful you can actually supply. Many suppliers set up saved searches for just their FSCs.

Example

A fastener distributor sets DIBBS to show only requests in the screws and bolts supply classes, so each morning he sees only quotes he can fill.

FSC: common questions

What is the difference between an FSC and a PSC?

FSCs are the product codes, all numeric. PSC is the umbrella term that includes FSCs plus the letter-coded service and research codes.

How do I find the FSC for a part?

Look at the National Stock Number. The first four digits are the FSC. You can also browse the PSC Manual for product groups.
