FAI (Federal Acquisition Institute)
FAI stands for Federal Acquisition Institute. The Federal Acquisition Institute (FAI) supports training and certification for the civilian acquisition workforce. It operates under GSA with policy direction from the Office of Federal Procurement Policy.
FAI provides courses, certification programs, and resources for contracting officers, contracting officer's representatives, and program managers in civilian agencies.
Why it matters to a small contractor
The contracting officers and representatives you deal with at civilian agencies are trained through FAI programs. Knowing their certification levels and duties helps you understand who can approve changes and who cannot.
Example
A contractor learns that the agency representative on site is a trained COR who can monitor work but cannot approve extra paid work, so it asks the contracting officer for a modification.
FAI: common questions
Who runs the Federal Acquisition Institute?
FAI operates under GSA, with policy guidance from OFPP.
Can a COR approve changes to my contract?
No. A contracting officer's representative monitors performance, but only a contracting officer can change the contract.
