DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency)
DARPA stands for Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is the DoD research agency created in 1958 to develop breakthrough technology for national security. It is known for early work that led to the internet and GPS.
DARPA mostly funds research through Broad Agency Announcements (BAAs), where companies and universities propose ideas. Program managers run time-limited programs and often use contracts, grants, and other transaction agreements.
Why it matters to a small contractor
DARPA is not a buyer of mowing, cleaning, or routine supplies. It matters to you only if you build prototypes, specialized hardware, or test equipment. Fabrication shops sometimes win work as subcontractors to research teams that need parts made quickly.
Example
A precision welding shop is asked by a university research team to fabricate a test frame for a DARPA-funded prototype and is paid as a subcontractor.
DARPA: common questions
How does DARPA award contracts?
Mostly through Broad Agency Announcements, where you submit an abstract and then a full proposal for a research idea. Awards are based on technical merit, not lowest price.
Does DARPA buy commercial products?
Rarely as an end goal. It buys what is needed for research programs, so most commercial suppliers reach DARPA work through research performers.
