DIU (Defense Innovation Unit)
DIU stands for Defense Innovation Unit. The Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) is a DoD organization that helps the military adopt commercial technology faster. It has offices near tech hubs such as Silicon Valley, Boston, and Austin.
DIU uses a process called a Commercial Solutions Opening (CSO). Companies submit a short pitch, the best are invited to present, and winners get prototype agreements that can lead to larger production deals.
Why it matters to a small contractor
DIU is aimed at companies with a ready commercial product, like drones, sensors, software, or energy systems. If you make a product that solves a real problem, DIU's short pitch format is far simpler than a traditional proposal. Service trades will rarely find a match here.
Example
A small company that builds rugged solar battery units answers a DIU call for portable power, submits a five-page pitch, and is invited to demonstrate its unit.
DIU: common questions
What is a Commercial Solutions Opening?
It is a competitive process where DoD describes a problem and companies propose commercial solutions in a short format. Selected firms negotiate prototype agreements instead of going through a full FAR contract.
Is DIU the same as DARPA?
No. DARPA funds new research, while DIU adapts technology that already exists commercially for military use.
