USAID (U.S. Agency for International Development)
USAID stands for U.S. Agency for International Development. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) was the federal agency that ran most U.S. foreign aid, including health, disaster relief, and development programs overseas, mostly through contracts and grants.
In 2025, the administration terminated most USAID awards. As of July 1, 2025, USAID stopped carrying out foreign assistance, and the programs that continued were moved to the State Department.
Why it matters to a small contractor
If you see an old USAID opportunity or contract vehicle, do not assume it is still active. Check SAM.gov and State Department notices for current foreign assistance buying. Firms owed money on terminated USAID awards should work through the termination settlement process.
Example
A supplier that once shipped goods for a USAID program finds the program now managed by a State Department bureau and contacts the new contracting office listed on the modification.
