State Department (U.S. Department of State)

State Department stands for U.S. Department of State. The U.S. Department of State (often called DOS or State) leads U.S. foreign policy and runs embassies and consulates around the world.

State buys security, construction, facility maintenance, IT, logistics, and supplies. Its Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations manages embassy construction and maintenance, and embassies also buy locally. Since July 2025, State has also run the foreign assistance programs that were not ended when USAID stopped operating.

Why it matters to a small contractor

Most State work happens overseas, which brings shipping, security, and local labor challenges. U.S. suppliers can sell goods shipped to posts, and construction firms can subcontract on embassy projects. Domestic offices also buy routine services.

Example

An electrical supply distributor quotes on a shipment of generator parts to be delivered to a U.S. embassy through a freight forwarder.

State Department: common questions

Does the State Department hire contractors for embassies?

Yes. State contracts for construction, maintenance, security, and supplies at embassies, often through large firms that subcontract specialty work.

Did State take over USAID?

In July 2025, USAID stopped carrying out foreign assistance, and the programs that continued moved to the State Department.
