USACE (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers)

USACE stands for U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is an Army command that handles engineering and construction. It builds and maintains military facilities and manages civil works such as dams, levees, locks, harbors, and flood control.

USACE is organized into divisions and districts, each with its own contracting office. It awards everything from small repair jobs to large construction projects, and it often uses multiple-award contracts (MATOCs) that pool several contractors for task orders.

Why it matters to a small contractor

USACE is one of the best federal buyers for construction trades, heavy equipment operators, environmental firms, and maintenance crews. Find your local district, learn its upcoming projects, and look for small business set-asides. Bonding is common on construction work, so line up a surety early.

Example

A site work company sees a USACE district solicitation for riprap repair along a levee, gets a bid bond from its surety, and submits a price by the bid opening date.

USACE: common questions

How do I get on a USACE contractor list?

There is no single list. Register in SAM.gov, watch your district's postings on SAM.gov, and attend district industry days. Multiple-award contracts are competed periodically, so watch for those.

Does USACE work only on military bases?

No. USACE also manages civil works like navigation channels, dams, and recreation areas, and it supports other agencies such as FEMA during disasters.
