SOCOM (U.S. Special Operations Command)
SOCOM stands for U.S. Special Operations Command. U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM) is the unified command that oversees special operations forces from all the military services. It is headquartered at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida.
SOCOM has its own acquisition authority and budget for equipment unique to special operations. Its acquisition office buys specialized gear, vehicles, communications, and training, and it runs outreach programs to find new commercial products.
Why it matters to a small contractor
SOCOM is a niche buyer. It fits companies with specialized products, training ranges, or support services near special operations bases. For general base services at those locations, the host base contracting office is usually the buyer.
Example
A small company that makes lightweight equipment cases demonstrates its product at a SOCOM industry event and later quotes on a small purchase for a unit.
