DLA (Defense Logistics Agency)
DLA stands for Defense Logistics Agency. The Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) is the Department of Defense's combat support agency for supplies. It buys and manages spare parts, fuel, food, uniforms, medical items, and construction material for all the military services.
DLA posts thousands of small purchase requests every day, most of them on DIBBS (the DLA Internet Bid Board System). Each request lists a National Stock Number (NSN), a quantity, and a delivery location. Many awards are made automatically to the lowest acceptable quote.
Why it matters to a small contractor
If you are a supplier or distributor, DLA is one of the most active buyers you will ever find. You can quote on a single part without a long proposal. The catch is that you must match the exact part number or approved source, and you need a CAGE code and a SAM.gov registration before you quote.
Example
A small industrial supply shop gets a DIBBS request for 25 hydraulic fittings by NSN, confirms its distributor stocks the approved manufacturer's part, and quotes a unit price with 30-day delivery.
DLA: common questions
What does DLA buy?
DLA buys spare parts for vehicles, aircraft, and ships, plus fuel, food, clothing, medical supplies, and building materials. It also sells surplus through its disposition services. The bulk of its small buys are spare parts.
How do I sell to DLA?
Register in SAM.gov, get a CAGE code, then create an account on DIBBS. Search open requests by NSN or by the item types you can source and submit quotes before the closing date.
