Amendment (Solicitation Amendment)
Amendment stands for Solicitation Amendment. An amendment is a formal change to a solicitation made before offers are due. Amendments can extend the deadline, answer contractor questions, swap in a new price sheet, change quantities or fix errors. Federal amendments are often issued on an SF 30.
You usually must acknowledge every amendment, either by signing and returning it or by listing it on your offer form. Failing to acknowledge a material amendment can make your offer unacceptable.
Why it matters to a small contractor
Amendments are where bids quietly die. A contractor prices the original scope, misses Amendment 0003 that added two buildings, and either loses or wins at a loss. Check the posting for new amendments right before you submit, and price the latest version only.
Example
A janitorial RFQ is posted with a Friday deadline. Amendment 0002 adds a Saturday cleaning to one building and pushes the due date out a week. A firm that acknowledges it and reprices is in the running; one that does not is likely out.
Amendment: common questions
How do I acknowledge an amendment?
Follow the amendment's instructions. Common methods are signing and returning the SF 30, or entering the amendment number and date in the acknowledgment block of your offer form.
What if an amendment comes out after I submitted?
Acknowledge it and resubmit or supplement your offer before the deadline if it changes anything you priced or promised.
