SBDC (Small Business Development Center)

SBDC stands for Small Business Development Center. A Small Business Development Center (SBDC) is a local office that provides free one-on-one business advice and low-cost training. SBDCs are funded in partnership with SBA and are usually hosted by universities, colleges, or state agencies.

SBDCs help with business plans, financing, marketing, cash flow, and growth. Some have specialists in government contracting, while others refer you to an APEX Accelerator.

Why it matters to a small contractor

Government contracts can strain cash flow because payment comes after the work. An SBDC adviser can help you plan for that, prepare for a loan or line of credit, and get your books in shape before you win.

Example

A trucking company preparing for its first federal hauling contract works with an SBDC adviser to set up a line of credit to cover fuel and payroll before the first payment.

SBDC: common questions

Are SBDC services free?

One-on-one advising is generally free. Some workshops and classes have a small fee.

What is the difference between an SBDC and an APEX Accelerator?

SBDCs focus on general business help, while APEX Accelerators focus on government contracting. Many owners use both.
