NIGP code (NIGP Commodity/Services Code)
NIGP code stands for NIGP Commodity/Services Code. The NIGP Commodity/Services Code is a numbering system that classifies goods and services. Many state and local governments use it to tag every solicitation and every registered vendor. When a bid posts, vendors with matching codes get notified.
Other systems also exist. Some states use UNSPSC codes, and federal buyers use NAICS. These are all called commodity codes in general, but they are not interchangeable, so use the system each portal asks for.
Why it matters to a small contractor
Your commodity codes control which bids land in your inbox. Choose every code that fits your work, including close variations, and review them once a year. Many small vendors miss bids simply because they picked one code when they needed six.
Example
A landscaping company registered only under a code for lawn mowing. After adding codes for tree trimming, irrigation repair, and snow removal, it starts receiving four times as many bid notices from its county.
NIGP code: common questions
Is an NIGP code the same as a NAICS code?
No. NAICS describes your industry and is used heavily by federal buyers. NIGP describes the specific product or service being bought and is common in state and local portals.
How many NIGP codes should I pick?
Pick every code that genuinely matches what you sell or do. Too few means missed bids. Too many unrelated codes just fills your inbox with noise.
