Bid tabulation (Bid tab)
Bid tabulation stands for Bid tab. A bid tabulation, or bid tab, is the document that lists every bidder and the prices they submitted. It is usually posted on the agency portal or website after the bid opening. Detailed tabs show line-item prices, not just totals.
Bid tabs are public records in most states. If one is not posted, you can usually request it from the purchasing office or through a public records request.
Why it matters to a small contractor
Bid tabs are the cheapest pricing intelligence a contractor can get. Pull tabs from past bids for the same service in nearby cities, and you will see the going rate, who wins, and how many competitors to expect.
Example
Before bidding a city's sidewalk repair contract, a concrete contractor downloads the last three years of bid tabs. The unit price per square foot that won has barely moved, so the contractor holds steady instead of adding a big cushion.
Bid tabulation: common questions
Where do I find old bid tabs?
Check the agency's procurement page or portal under closed or awarded bids. If nothing is posted, email the purchasing office or file a public records request.
Are line-item prices always shown?
Not always. Some agencies post only totals. Line items are often available on request after award.
