IHS (Indian Health Service)

IHS stands for Indian Health Service. The Indian Health Service (IHS) is an agency within HHS that provides health care to members of federally recognized American Indian and Alaska Native tribes. It runs hospitals and clinics, many in rural areas.

IHS buys medical supplies, equipment, facility maintenance, construction, and staffing services. Under the Buy Indian Act, IHS gives preference to qualified Indian Economic Enterprises when the rules are met.

Why it matters to a small contractor

IHS facilities are often far from big cities, which can make local trades very valuable. HVAC, plumbing, roofing, and grounds firms near IHS clinics may face less competition. If your business is Indian-owned, learn the Buy Indian Act rules.

Example

A rural plumbing company bids on an IHS request to replace water heaters at a clinic two hours from the nearest large city.

IHS: common questions
