FCC (Federal Communications Commission)

FCC stands for Federal Communications Commission. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is an independent agency that regulates interstate and international communications by radio, television, wire, satellite, and cable.

The FCC buys IT, engineering support, and office services. It also runs spectrum auctions and oversees programs that fund broadband and phone service, which create work for telecom contractors through the companies that receive the money.

Why it matters to a small contractor

Direct FCC contracts are few. Telecom, tower, and fiber trades are more likely to benefit from FCC-funded broadband programs carried out by carriers and providers. Contractors installing equipment should also know FCC rules on banned telecom gear.

Example

A tower crew is hired by a rural carrier to replace equipment under an FCC-funded program that removes certain banned network gear.

FCC: common questions

Does the FCC hire contractors?

It buys services for its own operations, but the amounts are small. Most FCC-related work flows through carriers and broadband programs.

What telecom equipment is banned on federal contracts?

Federal rules bar certain telecommunications equipment from specific foreign companies. Contracts include clauses requiring you to certify compliance.
