Education (U.S. Department of Education)

Education stands for U.S. Department of Education. The U.S. Department of Education (often called ED) administers federal education funding and student aid. Most of its money flows to states, school districts, and colleges, not to contractors.

Since 2025, the department has signed interagency agreements moving day-to-day management of many programs to other departments, including Labor and HHS. Its own contracting focuses on student aid processing, loan servicing, IT, and research.

Why it matters to a small contractor

Direct Education contracts are mostly for large IT and service firms. For trades, the real opportunity is local schools and colleges spending their own and federal funds. Because programs have moved, confirm which agency now manages a program before chasing it.

Example

A roofing company bids on a school district roof replacement funded in part with federal money and follows the district's own bid rules.

Education: common questions

Does Education hire construction contractors?

Rarely directly. School construction is bid by local districts and colleges.
