Punch List

Punch List. A punch list is a list of remaining items that must be corrected or completed before a project is accepted as finished. It is common in construction and renovation, and is usually made during a walk-through near completion by the contractor and the government's representative.

Items are often small (touch-up paint, missing cover plates, loose trim, cleanup), but final acceptance and final payment usually wait until the list is cleared.

Why it matters to a small contractor

Do your own pre-walk before the government's walk-through, and fix what you find. A short punch list shows quality and speeds up final payment. Assign each item to a person with a date, and send photos of completed items.

Example

At the final walk of a restroom renovation, the inspector lists eight items: two loose grab bars, a missing door stop, caulk gaps and debris in the ceiling. The contractor fixes everything in two days and submits photos for sign-off.

Punch List: common questions

Is a punch list a formal contract document?

Not usually a standard government form, but it is commonly used in construction contract administration and can be tied to substantial or final completion.

Can the government withhold money until the punch list is done?

Construction contracts often allow the government to retain amounts or delay final payment until work is complete and accepted. Check your payment clause.
