NFS (NASA FAR Supplement)
NFS stands for NASA FAR Supplement. The NFS is NASA's supplement to the FAR, found in Title 48 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Chapter 18. It applies when NASA centers and offices buy supplies, services, research, and construction.
NFS clauses start with 1852. They cover topics like safety and health plans, security for NASA sites, protection of technical data, and reporting on major projects. NASA centers often need facility support like custodial, grounds, and maintenance work, which also carries NFS clauses.
Why it matters to a small contractor
NASA centers are large campuses that need the same everyday trades as any big facility. NFS safety clauses can require a written safety plan and incident reporting, so a subcontractor with a solid safety record and written program has an edge.
Example
A roofing contractor quoting repairs at a NASA center sees an NFS safety and health clause. They attach their written safety program and recent safety record to the quote, which the prime needs for its proposal.
NFS: common questions
Does NASA use the FAR?
Yes. NASA follows the FAR and adds the NFS on top. Both appear in NASA contracts.
Are NFS clauses only for space work?
No. They apply to all NASA buying, including facilities, IT, and ordinary services.
