ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations)

ITAR stands for International Traffic in Arms Regulations. ITAR is a set of State Department regulations that control the export of defense articles, defense services, and related technical data on the U.S. Munitions List. It is run by the Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (DDTC).

Under ITAR, sharing controlled technical data with a foreign person, even inside the United States, can count as an export that needs a license. U.S. companies that manufacture or export defense articles generally must register with DDTC.

Why it matters to a small contractor

Most trade service work never touches ITAR. But if you machine parts from military drawings, repair defense equipment, or handle technical data, you may need to register and restrict who can see the files. Ask the prime if the drawings or data are ITAR controlled before you accept them.

Example

A small machine shop is asked to quote parts for a military vehicle. The drawings are marked ITAR controlled, so they confirm only U.S. person employees will access them and check whether they need DDTC registration.

ITAR: common questions
